Voluntary clean-up work

As part of the European Week for Waste Reduction, Torrevieja proposes its ‘Let’s Clean Up Europe!’ campaign, to raise public awareness of waste collection and encourage citizens to take part.

Every year, millions of tonnes of waste are dumped into the ocean, on beaches, in forests and in nature in general. The main causes are the unsustainable consumption and production patterns in today’s society, low-quality waste management strategies and lack of public awareness. To reduce the amount of rubbish in nature and increase visibility of the issues, a voluntary clean-up has been organised to protect biodiversity in the Lagunas de la Mata-Torrevieja Natural Park.

Several campaigns are running in Europe over the week, to celebrate ‘The European Week for Waste Reduction’ and thus tackle the problem of waste in nature.

Our voluntary action is part of this European campaign to clean public spaces. ‘Let's Clean-Up Europe!’ aims to combine these initiatives to create a Europe-wide event on the same day, involving and engaging as many members of the public as possible.

The Natural Park is organising this clean-up day together with Torrevieja Town Council and the company Agamed, with the collaboration of the University of Alicante, the company TM and the association ANSE. It will take place on Saturday, 12 May, at 10 am.
